On 15 December, the security forces of Afghanistan and Pakistan engaged in an armed clash at the Chaman border which killed one individual and injured 15 others. The clash took place four days after the Afghan authorities apologized for the cross-border shelling that killed eight people. The media wing of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported that indiscriminate firing from the Afghanistan side injured civilians continuously through the day, and even targeting women and children. The Afghan Ministry has, however, accused Pakistan for the aggression and claimed that the forces from the other side opened fire first. The Afghan Ministry of Defence said: “Negative actions and creating excuses for war will benefit no one.”
On the same day, Senator Farook H. Naek addressed the Senate Standing Committee of Foreign Affairs and called for revisiting the strategy towards Afghanistan. Senator Naek also highlighted the recent assassination attempt on the Pakistani head of mission in Kabul Ubaidur Rehman Nizamani. He criticized the Afghan government and said: “We act as spokesperson of Afghanistan in the world against the wishes of the West, but on the contrary, the Afghan government often opposes Pakistan and raises guns against us which is very unfortunate.” (“Border clashes erupt again days after Kabul ‘apology’,” Dawn, 16 December 2022; “Farooq Naek calls for revisiting Afghan policy,” Dawn, 16 December 2022)
